RESUMO

Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are special types of moles. CMN happen when extra pigment-making cells (melanocytes) grow in a baby's skin while the baby is forming before birth. They are not caused by anything their parent did or didn't do during pregnancy. These moles are there when the baby is born, stay on the skin for life, and grow as the child grows.

RESUMO

A conductive nanocomposite consisting of heparin-stabilized gold nanoparticles embedded in graphene was prepared and characterized to develop an electrochemical sensor for the determination of esculetin in tea and jam samples. The gold nanoparticles were characterized by spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The different proportions of graphene in the nanocomposite were evaluated and characterized by electrochemical practices. The heterostructure material on the glassy carbon electrode with esculetin showed π-π stacking interactions with an adsorption-controlled process. The voltammetric profile of esculetin using the proposed nanomaterial presented oxidation and reduction peaks at +0.61 and +0.58 V vs. Ag/AgCl, respectively, facilitating the electron transfer with esculetin through the transfer of two moles of protons and two moles of electrons per mole of esculetin. Using optimized conditions and square wave voltammetry, the calibration curve was obtained with two linear ranges, from 0.1 to 20.5 µmol L-1, with a detection limit of 43.0 nmol L-1. The electrochemical sensor showed satisfactory results for repeatability and stability, although interferences were observed in the presence of high concentrations of ascorbic acid or quercetin. The sensor was successfully applied in the determination of esculetin in samples of mulberry jam, white mulberry leaf tea, and white mulberry powder tea, presenting adequate recovery ranges. This directive provides valuable insights for the development of novel electrochemical sensors using heparin-based conductive nanomaterials with improved sensitivity and sensibility.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Hydatidiform mole is one of the gestational trophoblastic disease and comprises complete (CM) and partial moles (PM), which carries a risk of developing persistence disease, invasive mole or choriocarcinoma. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been discovered in various tissues, including neoplastic tissues. Its role in the pathogenesis of molar pregnancy or as biomarkers are still largely uncertain. The aim of this study is to identify the differentially expressed miRNAs in CM and PM. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using next-generation sequencing, the miRNAs profiles of CM (n=3) and PM (n=3) moles, including placenta of non-molar abortus (n=3) as control were determined. The differentially expressed miRNAs between each group were analysed. Subsequently, bioinformatics analysis using miRDB and Targetscan was utilised to predict target genes. RESULTS: We found 10 differentially expressed miRNAs in CMs and PMs, compared to NMAs, namely miR- 518a-5p, miR-423-3p, miR-503-5p, miR-302a-3p, and miR-1323. The other 5 miRNAs were novel, not listed in the known database. The 3 differentially expressed miRNAs in CMs were predicted to commonly target ZTBT46 and FAM73B mRNAs. DISCUSSION: miR-518 was consistently observed to be downregulated in CM versus PM, and CM versus NMA. Further bioinformatic analysis to provide insight into the possible role of these miRNAs in the pathogenesis of HMs, progression of disease and as potential diagnostic biomarkers as well as therapeutic targets for HMs is needed.

RESUMO

Oxygen exchange reactions occurring at ß-catalytic sites of the FOF1-ATP synthase/F1-ATPase imprint a unique record of molecular events during the catalytic cycle of ATP synthesis/hydrolysis. This work presents a new theory of oxygen exchange and tests it on oxygen exchange data recorded on ATP hydrolysis by mitochondrial F1-ATPase (MF1). The apparent rate constant of oxygen exchange governing the intermediate Pi-HOH exchange accompanying ATP hydrolysis is determined by kinetic analysis over a ~50,000-fold range of substrate ATP concentration (0.1-5000 µM) and a corresponding ~200-fold range of reaction velocity (3.5-650 [moles of Pi/{moles of F1-ATPase}-1 s-1]). Isotopomer distributions of [18O]Pi species containing 0, 1, 2, and 3 labeled oxygen atoms predicted by the theory have been quantified and shown to be in perfect agreement with the experimental distributions over the entire range of medium ATP concentrations without employing adjustable parameters. A novel molecular mechanism of steady-state multisite ATP hydrolysis by the F1-ATPase has been proposed. Our results show that steady-state ATP hydrolysis by F1-ATPase occurs with all three sites occupied by Mg-nucleotide. The various implications arising from models of energy coupling in ATP synthesis/hydrolysis by the ATP synthase/F1-ATPase have been discussed. Current models of ATP hydrolysis by F1-ATPase, including those postulated from single-molecule data, are shown to be effectively bisite models that contradict the data. The trisite catalysis formulated by Nath's torsional mechanism of energy transduction and ATP synthesis/hydrolysis since its first appearance 25 years ago is shown to be in better accord with the experimental record. The total biochemical information on ATP hydrolysis is integrated into a consistent model by the torsional mechanism of ATP synthesis/hydrolysis and shown to elucidate the elementary chemical and mechanical events within the black box of enzyme catalysis in energy metabolism by F1-ATPase.

RESUMO

Golden moles (Chrysochloridae) and marsupial moles (Notoryctidae) are textbook examples of convergent evolution. Both taxa are highly adapted to subterranean lifestyles and have powerful limbs for digging through the soil/sand, ears that are adapted for low-frequency hearing, vestigial eyes that are covered by skin and fur, and the absence of optic nerve connections between the eyes and the brain. The eyes of marsupial moles also lack a lens as well as retinal rods and cones. Two hypotheses have been proposed to account for the greater degeneracy of the eyes of marsupial moles than golden moles. First, marsupial moles may have had more time to adapt to their underground habitat than other moles. Second, the eyes of marsupial moles may have been rapidly and recently vestigialized to (1) reduce the injurious effects of sand getting into the eyes and (2) accommodate the enlargement of lacrimal glands that keep the nasal cavity moist and prevent the entry of sand into the nasal passages during burrowing. Here, we employ molecular evolutionary methods on DNA sequences for 38 eye genes, most of which are eye-specific, to investigate the timing of relaxed selection (=neutral evolution) for different groups of eye-specific genes that serve as proxies for distinct functional components of the eye (rod phototransduction, cone phototransduction, lens/cornea). Our taxon sampling included 12 afrothere species, of which two are golden moles (Amblysomus hottentotus, Chrysochloris asiatica), and 28 marsupial species including two individuals of the southern marsupial mole (Notoryctes typhlops). Most of the sequences were mined from databases, but we also provide new genome data for A. hottentotus and one of the two N. typhlops individuals. Even though the eyes of golden moles are less degenerate than the eyes of marsupial moles, there are more inactivating mutations (e.g., frameshift indels, premature stop codons) in their cone phototransduction and lens/cornea genes than in orthologous genes of the marsupial mole. We estimate that cone phototransduction recovery genes were inactivated first in each group, followed by lens/cornea genes and then cone phototransduction activation genes. All three groups of genes were inactivated earlier in golden moles than in marsupial moles. For the latter, we estimate that lens/cornea genes were inactivated ~17.8 million years ago (MYA) when stem notoryctids were burrowing in the soft soils of Australian rainforests. Selection on phototransduction activation genes was relaxed much later (5.38 MYA), during the early stages of Australia's aridification that produced coastal sand plains and eventually sand dunes. Unlike cone phototransduction activation genes, rod phototransduction activation genes are intact in both golden moles and one of the two individuals of N. typhlops. A second marsupial mole individual has just a single inactivating mutation in one of the rod phototransduction activation genes (PDE6B). One explanation for this result is that some rod phototransduction activation genes are pleiotropic and are expressed in extraocular tissues, possibly in conjunction with sperm thermotaxis.

RESUMO

The development of cutaneous melanoma of the skin based on dysplastic nevus is not uncommon. The causes of the progression of nevi to melanomas are numerous and not well understood at present. Certain genetic and epigenetic factors have a major influence on this evolution. We describe a 46-year-old female patient with multiple dermal melanocytic nevi who developed a polypoid melanoma in one of them. After a carefully performed anamnesis, the mole that developed into melanoma was found to be localized in the dorsal area adjacent to the brassiere and underwent permanent and daily mechanical irradiation during the last 6-7 years. Around this mole there were 5 other moles with similar clinical and dermatoscopic morphology, which did not transform into melanomas and were not subjected to mechanical irritation. The patient had a dermatological examination 6 years ago and it was suggested that this lesion has to be surgically removed, which she declined. The patient was treated surgically and the lesion suspicious for cutaneous melanoma was removed in two stages according to the generally accepted AJCC/EJC recommendations. In parallel, 5 additional melanocytic nevi were removed, which histologically had features of dysplastic dermal melanocytic nevi but no signs of progression to melanoma. This article discusses the causes of nevus -associated melanomas and emphasizes the thesis of potential malignant transformation through mechanical irritation - in this case that of the brassiere. The moles localized in this area, although clinically and dermatoscopically inapparent, should be treated surgically. This painless, short-term manipulation has a preventive effect on the future development of cutaneous melanomas.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Biodiversity is generally reduced when non-native species invade an ecosystem. Invasive crayfish, Procambarus clarkii, populate California freshwater streams, and in the Santa Monica Mountains (Los Angeles, USA), their introduction has led to trophic cascades due to omnivorous feeding behavior and a rapid rate of population growth. The native California newt, Taricha torosa, possesses a neurotoxin, tetrodotoxin (TTX), that affects freshwater animal behavior. Given P. clarkii has a limited evolutionary history with TTX, we hypothesized that TTX may affect crayfish feeding behaviors. To determine if TTX affects P. clarkii behavior, we measured cumulative movement and various feeding behaviors of P. clarkii exposed to (i) waterborne, ecologically realistic concentrations of TTX (~ 3.0 × 10- 8 moles/L), (ii) an anuran chemical cue to account for intraguild cues, or (iii) a T. torosa chemical cue with quantitated TTX in it (~ 6.2 × 10- 8 moles/L). RESULTS: We found that the presence of TTX in any form significantly reduced crayfish movement and decreased the amount of food consumed over time. Crayfish responses to the anuran treatment did not significantly differ from controls. CONCLUSION: Our laboratory results show that naturally occurring neurotoxin from native California newts limits invasive crayfish foraging and feeding rates, which may play a role in preserving local stream ecosystems by limiting invasive crayfish behaviors that are detrimental to biodiversity.

RESUMO

Different Cr-based bimetallic oxides were prepared, and their catalytic performance was evaluated on the simultaneous removal of multi-VOCs mixtures (acetone, benzene, toluene, and o-xylene) by ozonation. Among them, Co-Cr catalyst stood out in catalytic ozonation of aromatic VOCs, and its activity on acetone conversion was promoted by raising the temperature and ozone concentrations, owing to lower crystallization, larger surface area, excellent redox and VOCs/CO2 desorption ability. Above 95% conversion of all multi-VOCs was achieved over the Co-Cr catalyst when the temperature was 100 °C and an excess ozone ratio λ (the ratio of actual moles of ozone to theoretical moles of ozone needed) was equal to 3. A competitive relationship was noticed during the removal process of four multiple VOCs, with significant inhibition of acetone conversion in the presence of aromatic VOCs, conceivably due to adsorption competition and byproducts accumulation. Effects of NO/SO2/H2O and respective reversibility were also investigated. The inhibition effects of NO/SO2/H2O on aromatic VOCs were far less than those on acetone. Further, the retarding effect of NO was reversible, attributing to physical adsorption competition, but the inhibition effect of SO2/H2O was irreversible, due to the blockage of active sites for VOCs removal. With the combination of scrubbing, multi-VOCs and NO/SO2 could be removed by catalytic ozonation simultaneously and efficiently. In-situ DRIFTS measurement was also conducted to investigate the adsorption and catalytic ozonation process of multi-VOCs mixtures, as well as under the presence of SO2/H2O, discovering the major intermediates, surface carboxylates and carboxylic acids.

RESUMO

Changes in gene expression represent an important source of phenotypic innovation. Yet how such changes emerge and impact the evolution of traits remains elusive. Here, we explore the molecular mechanisms associated with the development of masculinizing ovotestes in female moles. By performing integrative analyses of epigenetic and transcriptional data in mole and mouse, we identified the co-option of SALL1 expression in mole ovotestes formation. Chromosome conformation capture analyses highlight a striking conservation of the 3D organization at the SALL1 locus, but an evolutionary divergence of enhancer activity. Interspecies reporter assays support the capability of mole-specific enhancers to activate transcription in urogenital tissues. Through overexpression experiments in transgenic mice, we further demonstrate the capability of SALL1 to induce kidney-related gene programs, which are a signature of mole ovotestes. Our results highlight the co-option of gene expression, through changes in enhancer activity, as a plausible mechanism for the evolution of traits.

RESUMO

In recent years, the number of mole species with species status confirmed by genetic methods has been continuously increasing. Unfortunately, cytogenetic data are not yet available for all species. Here, for the first time, a GTG-banded karyotype of the small-toothed mole from Vietnam, Euroscaptor parvidens, a representative of the Eastern clade of the genus Euroscaptor, has been described. Through comparative analysis of available Euroscaptor (Euroscaptor parvidens, Euroscaptor klossi, and Euroscaptor malayana) and Oreoscaptor (Oreoscaptor mizura) karyotypes, we found cytogenetic signatures for each of the studied species. Zoo-FISH with sorted chromosomes of the Siberian mole (Talpa altaica) on chromosome sets of the small-toothed mole (E. parvidens), the small Japanese mole (Mogera imaizumii) from the closely related genus, and the Japanese shrew mole (Urotrichus talpoides) from the tribe Urotrichini made it possible to identify syntenic regions between these species. We propose a possible ancestral karyotype of the tribe and, based on it, traced the features of chromosomal rearrangements accompanying the divergence of moles. The low rates of chromosomal evolution within the species of the genus Talpa-T. altaica and T. europaea-and the high rates of karyotypic reshuffling within the Asian genera of the tribe were confirmed. The karyotype of the Japanese mountain mole O. mizura seems to be the most conserved among the Asian moles. The most frequently occurring types of chromosomal rearrangements in moles are the pericentric inversions and amplification of heterochromatin. The pericentric inversions on four pairs of autosomes are shared between the closely related genera Euroscaptor, Oreoscaptor, and Mogera, while many more apomorphic rearrangements have occurred in each lineage additionally. The highest rate of chromosomal changes, with five rearrangements occurring over approximately 7 million years, was recorded in the lineage of the small-toothed mole.

RESUMO

The recent detection of both Nova virus (NVAV) and Bruges virus (BRGV) in European moles (Talpa europaea) in Belgium and Germany prompted a search for related hantaviruses in the Iberian mole (Talpa occidentalis). RNAlater®-preserved lung tissue from 106 Iberian moles, collected during January 2011 to June 2014 in Asturias, Spain, were analyzed for hantavirus RNA by nested/hemi-nested RT-PCR. Pairwise alignment and comparison of partial L-segment sequences, detected in 11 Iberian moles from four parishes, indicated the circulation of genetically distinct hantaviruses. Phylogenetic analyses, using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian methods, demonstrated three distinct hantaviruses in Iberian moles: NVAV, BRGV, and a new hantavirus, designated Asturias virus (ASTV). Of the cDNA from seven infected moles processed for next generation sequencing using Illumina HiSeq1500, one produced viable contigs, spanning the S, M and L segments of ASTV. The original view that each hantavirus species is harbored by a single small-mammal host species is now known to be invalid. Host-switching or cross-species transmission events, as well as reassortment, have shaped the complex evolutionary history and phylogeography of hantaviruses such that some hantavirus species are hosted by multiple reservoir species, and conversely, some host species harbor more than one hantavirus species.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Reactive cutaneous capillary endothelial proliferation (RCCEP) is the most prevalent immune-related adverse event observed in patients undergoing camrelizumab treatment, and there is a lack of effective therapeutic strategies. Thalidomide (THD) has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antiangiogenic, and antitumor properties, which have led to its use in various autoimmune diseases, hematological malignancies, solid tumors, and other disorders. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 52-year-old male patient with lung cancer developed vascular moles on his face, neck, and back after 3 cycles of chemotherapy comprising pemetrexed and carboplatin combined with camrelizumab immunotherapy. The moles ranged in size (0.1-1.2 cm) and were red or red-black, appearing on the skin's surface. The patient was advised to avoid scratching or friction, continue monitoring, and apply Yunnan Baiyao powder if a papule ruptured. After the third treatment cycle, papules on the patient's face, particularly an eyelid vascular mole, ulcerated, causing significant psychological distress. DIAGNOSIS: RCCEP induced by camrelizumab was considered. INTERVENTIONS: The patient received 50 mg of THD in the morning and 100 mg in the evening. OUTCOMES: The vascular nevus began to shrivel after 1 week and started disappearing after 2 weeks of THD treatment. After 3 THD treatment courses, RCCEP was alleviated without recurrence, allowing the patient to successfully complete camrelizumab treatment. LESSONS: During treatment with camrelizumab, if a patient develops moderate or severe RCCEP, and local therapy or anti-infective therapies prove insufficient, THD may be considered as a potential treatment option to improve RCCEP symptoms.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Treisman (1980) proposed that visual-spatial attention to targets presented with distractors involves parallel and serial cognition. When the target is different from distractors by a single feature, the number of distractors does not influence search speed (parallel). However, when the target is different from the distractor by a conjunction of features, increased numbers of distractors increase task difficulty (serial). Here, we developed a serious game in immersive virtual reality (IVR) for evaluating spatial and distractor inhibition attention. METHODS: We tested 60 healthy participants. They performed the serious game in which they had to find a target mole wearing a red miner's helmet. In the single feature parallel conditions, the distractor moles wore blue (miner's or horned) helmets, and in the conjunction feature serial conditions, the distractor moles wore blue miner's helmets or red horned helmets. There were 11-17-23 distractors. Responses were made with the dominant hand by hitting the target with a virtual hammer. We measured mean response time (RT), mean velocity (MV) and coefficient of variance of speed (CV). RESULTS: Participants were significantly slower (RT and MV) and showed greater CV when responding to targets in conjunction compared to single feature search tasks. Further, participants were slower (RT and MV) and showed greater CV when the number of distractors increased. A significant interaction between search tasks and distractors showed that RT and CV only increased with distractor number for the conjunction search tasks. MV decreased with distractor number for both single and conjunction tasks, with a stronger decrease for conjunction relative to single feature search. CONCLUSION: The results replicated previous findings, providing support for the use of immersive virtual reality technology for the simultaneous evaluation of spatial and distractor inhibition attention using complex 3D objects.

RESUMO

Carbon dioxide is a major greenhouse gas that is responsible for global warming and renders harmful effects on the atmosphere. The unconstrained release of CO2 into the atmosphere should be prevented and various techniques have been developed in this regard to capture CO2 using different solvents and other compounds. Ionic liquids are a suitable candidate to capture CO2 due to their better solubility behaviour. In this work, two ionic liquids namely tetramethylammonium bromide (TMAB) and tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB) are employed experimentally to capture CO2 and investigate their solubility behaviour. The study is performed at the temperature values of 303 K, 313 K, and 323 K and the pressure values of 5, 10, 15, and 20 bar equivalent to 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 MPa respectively. The concentrations of both ionic liquid solutions are 2.5 wt%, 5.0 wt%, and 10.0 wt%. The solubility results are considered in terms of mol fraction which is the ratio of moles of CO2 captured per moles of ionic liquid. The density and viscosity values are also determined for both compounds at respective conditions. COSMO-RS is used to generate the sigma profile, sigma surface, and Henry's constant of the ions involved in the study. CO2 is found to be soluble in both ionic liquids, but TEAB showed better solubility behaviour as compared to TMAB. The solubility of CO2 is found to be increasing with the increase in pressure while it decreases with the increase in temperature.

RESUMO

The general notion of complete hydatidiform moles is that most of them consist entirely of paternal DNA; hence, they do not express p57, a paternally imprinted gene. This forms the basis for the diagnosis of hydatidiform moles. There are about 38 paternally imprinted genes. The aim of this study is to determine whether other paternally imprinted genes could also assist in the diagnostic approach of hydatidiform moles. This study comprised of 29 complete moles, 15 partial moles and 17 non-molar abortuses. Immunohistochemical study using the antibodies of paternal-imprinted (RB1, TSSC3 and DOG1) and maternal-imprinted (DNMT1 and GATA3) genes were performed. The antibodies' immunoreactivity was evaluated on various placental cell types, namely cytotrophoblasts, syncytiotrophoblasts, villous stromal cells, extravillous intermediate trophoblasts and decidual cells. TSSC3 and RB1 expression were observed in all cases of partial moles and non-molar abortuses. In contrast, their expression in complete moles was identified in 31% (TSSC3) and 10.3% (RB1), respectively (p < 0.0001). DOG1 was consistently negative in all cell types in all cases. The expressions of maternally imprinted genes were seen in all cases, except for one case of complete mole where GATA3 was negative. Both TSSC3 and RB1 could serve as a useful adjunct to p57 for the discrimination of complete moles from partial moles and non-molar abortuses, especially in laboratories that lack comprehensive molecular service and in cases where p57 staining is equivocal.

RESUMO

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) determination has been used for many decades to assess microbial contamination for hygiene monitoring in different locations and workplace environments. Highly sophisticated methods have been reported, yet commercially available kits rely on a luciferase-luciferin system and require storage and shipping at controlled temperatures (+4 or -20 °C). The applicability of these systems is limited by the need for a secure cold chain, which is not always applicable, especially in remote areas or low-resource settings. In this scenario, easy-to-handle and portable sensors would be highly valuable. Prompted by this need, we developed a bioluminescence paper biosensor for ATP monitoring in which a new luciferase mutant was combined with a metal-organic framework (MOF); i.e., zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). A paper biosensor was developed, ZIF-8@Luc paper sensor, and interfaced with different portable light detectors, including a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) and smartphones. The use of ZIF-8 not only provided a five-fold increase in the bioluminescence signal, but also significantly improved the stability of the sensor, both at +4 and +28 °C. The ATP content in complex biological matrices was analyzed with the ZIF-8@Luc paper sensor, enabling detection down to 7 × 10-12 moles of ATP and 8 × 10-13 moles in bacterial lysates and urine samples, respectively. The ZIF-8@Luc sensor could, therefore, be applied in many fields in which ATP monitoring is required such as the control of microbial contamination.

RESUMO

Coccolithophores are typically thought of as photoautotrophs, yet a few genera inhabit sub-euphotic environments with insufficient light for photosynthesis, suggesting that other carbon acquisition strategies are likely. Field experiments were performed in the northwest Atlantic (a region with potentially abundant coccolithophores). Phytoplankton populations were incubated with 14C-labeled dissolved organic carbon (DOC) compounds, acetate, mannitol, and glycerol. Coccolithophores were sorted from these populations 24 hours later using flow cytometry, and DOC uptake was measured. DOC uptake rates were as high as 10-15 moles cell-1 day-1, slow relative to photosynthesis rates (10-12 moles cell-1 day-1). Growth rates on the organic compounds were low, suggesting that osmotrophy plays more of a survival strategy in low-light situations. Assimilated DOC was found in both particulate organic carbon and calcite coccoliths (particulate inorganic carbon), suggesting that osmotrophic uptake of DOC into coccolithophore calcite is a small but notable part of the biological carbon pump and alkalinity pump paradigms.

RESUMO

Earlier, we demonstrated the co-circulation of genetically distinct non-rodent-borne hantaviruses, including Boginia virus (BOGV) in the Eurasian water shrew (Neomys fodiens), Seewis virus (SWSV) in the Eurasian common shrew (Sorex araneus) and Nova virus (NVAV) in the European mole (Talpa europaea), in central Poland. To further investigate the phylogeny of hantaviruses harbored by soricid and talpid reservoir hosts, we analyzed RNAlater®-preserved lung tissues from 320 shrews and 26 moles, both captured during 1990-2017 across Poland, and 10 European moles from Ukraine for hantavirus RNA through RT-PCR and DNA sequencing. SWSV and Altai virus (ALTV) were detected in Sorex araneus and Sorex minutus in Boginia and the Bialowieza Forest, respectively, and NVAV was detected in Talpa europaea in Huta Dlutowska, Poland, and in Lviv, Ukraine. Phylogenetic analyses using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian methods showed geography-specific lineages of SWSV in Poland and elsewhere in Eurasia and of NVAV in Poland and Ukraine. The ATLV strain in Sorex minutus from the Bialowieza Forest on the Polish-Belarusian border was distantly related to the ATLV strain previously reported in Sorex minutus from Chmiel in southeastern Poland. Overall, the gene phylogenies found support long-standing host-specific adaptation.

RESUMO

The star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata) is renowned for its densely innervated 22 appendage star-like rostrum ('star') specialized for tactile sensation. As a northerly distributed insectivorous mammal exploiting aquatic and terrestrial habitats, these vascularized nasal rays are regularly exposed to cold water and thermally conductive soil, leading us to ask whether the star surface temperature, a proxy for blood flow, conforms to the local ambient temperature to conserve body heat. Alternatively, given the exquisite sensory nature of the star, we posited that the uninsulated rays may be kept warm when foraging to maintain high mechanosensory function. To test these hypotheses, we remotely monitored surface temperatures in wild-caught star-nosed moles. Although the tail acted as a thermal window exhibiting clear vasoconstriction/vasodilation, the star varied passively in surface temperature, with little evidence for thermoregulatory vasomotion. This thermoconforming response may have evolved to minimize conductive heat loss to the water or wet soils when foraging.
